Near Le Lavandou, the Domaine du Rayol spans 20 hectares of unspoiled nature at the foot of the Massif des Maures, offering spectacular views over the islands of Hyères, Porquerolles, Port-Cros, and the Îles du Levant. Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral and located in the commune of Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer, this remarkable property invites visitors on a journey through themed gardens that pay tribute to Mediterranean landscapes from around the world.
The Jardin des Méditerranées is the result of the passion of globe-trotting botanist Gilles Clément, who created a mosaic of Mediterranean-inspired plant worlds spread across seven hectares in the heart of the Rayol estate, along the Corniche des Maures. During his travels, the landscape architect discovered these species and brought them together in this striking open-air botanical museum.
Three major concepts, developed by this resolutely contemporary landscape designer, shape the spirit of the gardens, including that of the planetary garden, which reflects the movement and hybridization of plant species. Around a dozen themed landscapes—South America, Subtropical regions, Chile, Australia, California, and more—form a planetary index of botanically similar plants from across the globe. Throughout the seasons, this lush promontory bathed in azure skies and the many shades of Mediterranean blue offers a symphony of blooms, each period revealing its own magic: from the intoxicating scents of mimosa and eucalyptus in winter to the cool freshness of ferns in the valley during summer.

Numerous themed walks allow visitors to wander along the paths of the Domaine du Rayol. In winter, the mimosa trail is undoubtedly the most emblematic Mediterranean walk on the French Riviera. These golden pompons that brighten the hills of the Riviera and the Var along the famous Mimosa Route also bloom here, at the heart of the Australian garden from which the tree originates. Since the 20th century, these majestic winter blossoms—celebrated each year from seaside resorts to inland villages—have become an integral part of the Mediterranean landscape.
At the entrance to the estate, a reminder of the region’s seaside heritage, the Hôtel de la Mer rises like a watchtower overlooking the Mediterranean. Built in the early 20th century, it traces the history of this resort destination once favored by wealthy holidaymakers. Successively a hotel-casino and then the subject of a tourism project in the 1970s, it was acquired in 1989 by the Conservatoire du Littoral.
This 1,200 m² ochre-colored building, characteristic of Provençal architecture, is currently undergoing restoration—particularly of its main structural elements—in parallel with the renaissance of Villa Rayol, now converted into an artists’ residence.
Beyond the endless bucolic walks offered by the Domaine du Rayol and its Jardin des Méditerranées, the immediate proximity of the sea provides a spectacular summer experience. During the warm season, as cicadas fill the air and the gardens seem to pause, the Baie du Figuier becomes an ideal spot to explore marine life along an underwater trail.
Just a few meters from the shore, the rocky seabed reveals a rich underwater world: posidonia meadows, sea cucumbers, wrasses, and schools of salema porgies populate these crystal-clear waters.
In tune with the rhythm of the seasons, the Domaine du Rayol hosts a vibrant cultural program throughout the year, featuring concerts, art exhibitions, Provençal festivities, and guided tours—making it a living place where nature, culture, and heritage come together.
