Formerly known as Villa Les Oiseaux, Villa Les Cèdres is reputed to hold the world record for the highest price per square meter. Located in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the property—on the market since last March—is estimated to be worth as much as €350 million.
Built in 1830, the villa was initially owned by the mayor of Villefranche-sur-Mer before becoming the property of King Leopold II of Belgium. He hosted his beloved Blanche Delacroix there, nicknamed Très-Belle, with whom he fell in love when she was a teenager and he was in his sixties. The woman he later named Baroness de Vaughan eventually sold the estate to Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle, the creator of Grand Marnier liqueur. Marnier-Lapostolle and his descendants went on to develop a 15-hectare botanical park featuring 25 heated greenhouses that house some 20,000 plant species, including 14,000 extremely rare tropical varieties—some of which were used in the production of the famous liqueur.
