Three years after being placed on the market, the former residence of Belgian King Leopold II was finally sold to Mr. Rinat Akhmetov for €200 million.
Built in 1830, Villa Les Cèdres boasts approximately 18,000 m² of living space set within a breathtaking 14-hectare botanical park. The property was acquired by the Italian spirits group Campari following its takeover of the Société des Produits Marnier-Lapostolle (SPML). Prior to that, the villa had belonged to Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle before becoming part of SPML’s assets.
This unique manor house features ten bedrooms, an Olympic-size swimming pool, 25 heated greenhouses housing more than 20,000 plant species—including 14,000 extremely rare tropical varieties—as well as an extraordinary chapel, all of which qualify it as a true corner of paradise.

Initially announced in 2016 with an asking price rumored to reach one billion euros, this historic estate in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat—often referred to as the “billionaires’ peninsula”—was at the time described as the most expensive property in the world. It ultimately lost this title when it was put up for sale by the Italian group and sold for a significantly lower amount than initially reported by the French press.
This immense residence, nestled in the heart of a vast park planted with majestic pines, has long fueled speculation regarding its true sale price. While Nice-Matin estimated its value at €1 billion, Le Figaro suggested a range between €300 and €500 million, and Bloomberg reported €350 million, Campari chose not to comment on these figures and remained discreet about the official transaction amount.
The current owner of this 19th-century estate—widely regarded as the richest man in Ukraine—has a remarkably diverse profile. In addition to being a leading Ukrainian businessman, he is also a politician, economist, philanthropist, and president of the Shakhtar Donetsk football club. He is also the founder of System Capital Management JSC, Ukraine’s largest industrial conglomerate.
According to Akhmetov’s company, SCM Holdings Limited, the acquisition of one of France’s most legendary properties represents a long-term investment. It is not, however, his only prestigious holding: his real estate portfolio also includes an apartment in London’s exclusive One Hyde Park development.
